  • Students will take notes in order to correctly answer the questions on the worksheet
  • Students will correctly label the four layers of the Earth
  • Students will identify one characteristic of each layer of the Earth

Instruction

Opening
I will begin the class by asking the students to answer a couple questions about what they know about the interior of the Earth
“Raise your hand if you think the Earth is made up of layers”
“Does anyone know what the Earth is made up of?”
“Raise your hand if you think the Earth is solid….liquid…both.”
After engaging the students in the lesson I will briefly review the answers to my opening questions. The students will now be engaged in the lesson and be ready to begin.
(5 minutes)

Learning Activities
After finishing the opening activity, I will open the PowerPoint of notes. These notes will be written in their notebooks, and also used to fill out a worksheet. I will let the students complete the PowerPoint without any talking, as they are already accustomed to taking notes. After they have finished writing the main points of this section, the students will work in pairs to complete the worksheet. I will use the projection board, which can double as a white board and a computer screen, to help the students understand the information. After the notes and the worksheet, I will show the students two videos. The first is a 3D image of a cross section of the Earth. This will help students visualize the concept of the layers of the Earth, which may be hard for some to understand. After, I will play the “layers of the Earth” song for the students. An optional extra credit assignment would be to create another verse of the song, or to have the students write out the important information from the lyrics.
(40 minutes)

Closing
I will wrap up the day by explaining to the class how the Earth’s layers are made up of many different “things” and ask them to think about what they would categorize the “things” as. Rocks? Soil? Metal? After I will explain to them that the next class period they will be creating their own questions and experiments based on their thoughts from this question. This will help them really think about the questions they have about what makes up the Earth.
(5-10 minutes)

Assessment
The worksheet will be used as a formative assessment.

Homework
Students will finish the worksheet, if not completed in class.
